Road rules and theory

I will help you prepare for the theory test which every learner needs to pass. You'll also receive valuable tips and information as part of every lesson, linking the theoretical knowledge to actual driving.  We use the Highway Code on most lessons.

FREE Theory Revision!

See the SDfL page for practice tests - sign up for learning. Some of it is 'common sense' but some you will need to do a bit of studying for. See the Links page to buy good resources, or the SDfL page, which will make it easy and simple to get the knowledge you need for both safe driving and the Theory test.

The theory test is divided into two parts:

  1. A multiple-choice test comprising 50 questions covering aspects of the Highway Code. The pass mark is 43.
  2. A hazard perception test consisting of a series of video clips of actual road hazards that need to be identified. Click the mouse when you see the hazard develop.  The pass mark is 44.

Now our nearest Theory Test centre is in Kendal.  Others in Barrow, Preston or Carlisle.

Book your tests through, the government's site.  If you do a search you may come across other sites which will book the test for you, but charge you extra.  It's easy enough to do it yourself on the Gov site.  Don't pay more for some simple form filling!

Practical test

The Driving Standards Agency carry out the driving tests in the UK.  I generally use the test centres in Kendal or Barrow, and know the test routes well.  The test is easily booked online, and costs £62

Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions. The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises. You will be asked to drive independently for about 15-20 minutes following either signs or a Sat Nav.  Don't be distracted by the sat nav, and sometimes it lies!  We'll cover all this in your lessons.

You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, you musn't commit any serious or dangerous faults.

When you can drive confidently, indpendently and safely, you're ready to take your test!
